Construction crews continue to make significant progress on the construction of the railroad overpass on State Road 46. Recent reports indicate that approximately 40 percent of the earthwork for the project has been completed. Engineers and contractors have been employing various dewatering methods to ensued proper compaction and consolidation of the fill material. The fill material is being imported from two sources: one immediately south of the project and the other approximately 3 miles south near Walesboro.
Work has also been progressing on the construction of the overpass structure. Steel “H” piles which have been driven into the earth until they reached rock will be used as structural foundations for the overpass. The piles that are now visible will be encased in concrete as the structure rises above the railroad.
The project is currently on schedule, with completion expected in the fall of 2020.
